Complex medical surgeries performed by AI or robotic hands have long been a dream. As AI becomes more widely used and enters trials, patients often question whether AI is more trustworthy and knowledgeable than a surgeon who has been in school their whole life. Many question whether AI will be able to adapt to serious complications in the operating room, whether it knows how to find an alternative surgical way if the original strategy fails, and finally, the scope of its knowledge. AI and robots have supported people in various fields, including struggling students and individuals who aren’t the best at making decisions on their own. But is that knowledge enough to be in charge of someone’s health and wellbeing? If a robot factually has no feelings, how can it judge what the best treatment is and be trusted with human life?
In reality, doctors and researchers have found many positive results, concluding that AI and Robots offer a much easier and cheaper perspective on complex invasive surgery. For example, AI-assisted robotic surgeries took 25% less time in the operating room and resulted in 30% fewer intraoperative complications. Also, AI showed an improvement in surgical precision and accuracy of about 40%, shortening patient recovery times by almost 15%. These results are proof that even though many individuals may underestimate AI, numerous trials show it is an amazing alternative to complex surgery. In fact, AI robots show extensive levels of precision and control. As noted in the article “The rise of robotics and AI-assisted surgery in modern healthcare” by the National Institute of Health, AI-guided surgeries can reach into places that humans have never explored, including executing digital twin simulations and image-based tissue segmentation techniques.
Because we, as humans, live in a world where healthcare is always in need of more workers, and with rising insurance costs and an aging population, the pressure on surgeons is extreme. Today, they have to stay in the operating room for hours, taking minimal breaks and waking up in the middle of the night just to respond to emergency trauma cases. With AI and robots present in all hospitals, surgeons can rest and prepare for more complex cases, while AI can execute smaller, less dangerous surgeries. Another benefit is that these machines can be more cost-effective and use fewer resources, which can be delegated to serious trauma cases in the hospital, as the patients tend to stay fewer days to recover.
So, I want you to ask yourself: “Would I trust an AI Robot to do a surgery on myself or my loved one?” In many cases, the answer to that question is no. Not because you don’t believe that AI is “smart enough”, but because one can never truly know what is happening in their system. What if there is a mistake? Who is at fault? It can be hard to establish accountability if an error happens. Legal and ethical questions remain unresolved when AI enters modern medicine. Because new technology is expensive, these robots are largely limited to well-funded hospitals, creating a considerable inequality between surgeons at smaller and larger hospitals. This can be directly tied to radical changes in care depending on a person's location or status.
So, decide for yourself. Whether AI is something one should trust is a decision that should stay open for all patients. Nobody can stop the modernization of the healthcare field. It will keep growing every single day. As new generations come in, new devices will be discovered, and techniques will evolve. So, perhaps there is some good in this new AI thing; perhaps it may inspire future medical technology and save endless lives. But that’s just a maybe; the only thing left for us to do is to wait and see what happens next.
